Info for parents and teachers
For secondary students, exposure to an authentic laboratory environment, hands-on investigations and interaction with scientists can be life changing . While most education leaders recognize this impact , , fewer and fewer opportunities exist today for teens to safely access the inspirational impact of authentic scientific working environments. The science of infectious diseases is a compelling topic for adolescents. Young adults positively respond to career and education materials that connect to careers/activities that have the ability to provide a living income, while reducing suffering worldwide.
The BioQuest Academy science immersion experience will help participants understand the nature of scientific research, as they work alongside scientists from Seattle Biomedical Research Institute and learn common laboratory skills (e.g., PCR, ELISAs and gel electrophoreisis). Being at the BioQuest Academy strengthens their learning of scientific concepts and has led to greater numbers of students (compared to national trends) enrolling in science majors in college since its commencement in 2004. Indirectly the BioQuest Academy also serves teachers, family members, peers and online visitors. With fewer Americans able to visualize the role of science in a healthy populace, a vibrant democracy and a growing economy, the BioQuest Academy provides the framework for broader community dialog in key content areas (e.g., science, global health, biomedical research and science careers).
With support from the National Center for Research and Resources at the National Institutes for Health, Seattle Biomedical Research Institute will host 3 BioQuest Academy sessions each summer (2007-2010) with each session accommodating 12 high school juniors. We hope that you will encourage a rising curious senior that you know to apply today!
