Tavis's Story
What are you doing now?
Right now I am an undergrad at the UW majoring in Biochemistry and planning on going to medical school after I graduate.
How has being at Seattle Biomedical Research Institute helped you today?
Seattle Biomedical Research Institute has helped to reach where I am today because it gave me research experience. This foundation has been very helpful in the research that I am currently conducting, as well as making me a more competitive applicant to medical school.
What do you enjoy about the college that you go to?
I like the UW because of all the benefits that come along with attending a large college. There are tons of programs and opportunities that the University makes available to students and plenty of advisors that are more than willing to help students along the way. I also like that there are always new people to meet, and that there is so much to do in Seattle.
What hobbies do you enjoy?
Music, movies, traveling, rock climbing, snowboarding, and Sudoku.
What is your global health story? What experiences have you had with global health?
Last summer I went to Uganda on a mission trip with my church, and while we were there we put on a youth crusade and also traveled around to different orphanages, schools, and churches. While there we assisted nurses in bringing the prisoners medicine, food, and soap because of the shocking living conditions.
The summer before I went to the Dominican Republic with a program called International Student Volunteers. Our trip allowed us to experience the local culture while building a school and teaching children English.
