Sewa's Story

I attended the BioQuest Academy in  2009 and my favorite lab was the DNA/Agarose Gel Lab.

BioQuest definitely opened windows of opportunity for me because I was able to see which career opportunities are available to me in the fields of Biology and Chemistry (which at first seemed very minimal before my experience at BioQuest.)

Right now, I am waiting for senior year to begin as I am beginning to fill out some college applications, as well as other pieces of paperwork for school clubs that I am leading. I definitely plan to attend college in the fall- specifically the schools which are at the top of my list are Columbia, USC, Harvard, and Pomona.

I am very much a computer geek so in my spare time you can probably find me blogging, or working on something related to music (reggae ton and hip hop to be specific). I also play volleyball and track at school, and am involved with a bunch of clubs and leadership boards in school, which are always fun.
DEFINITELY take advantage of every single moment you have at BioQuest. You are working with REAL scientists who are doing REAL research concerning very REAL epidemics which are plaguing the world today. If you have a question, don’t be afraid to ask! And be aware: you might end up loving what you do — enough to pursue a career at an institution such as Seattle Biomedical Research Institute.

During the summer after my sophomore year in high school, I went to the Dominican Republic for a month and absolutely fell in love with everything and everyone in this small island nation. Though we were there largely to conduct English classes in a small ‘campo’, I along with some others in my group worked with the women and children of the campo to raise awareness about the environment, water sanitation, and heart disease. Through my experience in the Dominican Republic, I definitely gained a greater perspective of the world through the eyes of another culture, and received much love from my “familia Dominicana”. I am planning to return to the Dominican Republic either late in 2009 or early 2010 to work with the school in the campo.
