Catherine traveled to Belize and Ecuador to shadow doctors in hospitals and clinics
Catherine attended the BioQuest Academy in August 2005. We asked her a few questions:
What was your favorite lab that you participated in while you attended the Academy?
My favorite lab experience was dissecting the mosquitos.
How has the BioQuest Academy helped you?
The BioQuest Academy has helped me to get a research position in a lab on campus as well as exposed me to some of the awesome things going on in research.
What are you doing now?
I am now at the University of Washington pursuing a dual-degree in both biology and biochemistry.
Now that you are a graduate of the BioQuest Academy, what advice would you give to an incoming student?
As a graduate of the BioQuest Academy, the advice I would give is to take it all in and be sure to put it on your resume.
What is your global health story? What experiences have you had with global health?
I have had global health experiences in both Belize and Ecuador. Each of these programs were medical shadowing opportunities where I shadowed doctors in both hospitals and clinics. I was able to have a hands on look at how healthcare is performed in developing countries and what is being done to improve the system. I would encourage everyone who is interested in global health to consider going on an international program that allows you to experience it first hand!
