BioQuest Academy participation

Prior to 2008, recruitment was primarily accomplished by encouraging teachers to nominate students. Using new recruitment tactics with SEPA funding from the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR, see Table 1), the 2008 and 2009 BQA cohorts more accurately reflected Seattle high school demographics (see Figures 2 & 3).

• building relationships with science teachers and with minority organizations
• direct presentations in schools during classes with a BQA alumnus
• public service announcement during the evening news segment of Hispanic-TV channel Univision® and in a morning program in TV Azteca ®, and a radio interview in the Seattle-based Hispanic radio station El Rey 1360®.
