For secondary students, exposure to an authentic laboratory environment, hands-on investigations and interaction with scientists can be life changing. While most education leaders recognize this impact, fewer and fewer opportunities exist today for teens to safely access the inspirational impact of authentic scientific working environments. The science of infectious diseases is a compelling topic for adolescents. Young adults positively respond to career and education materials that connect to careers/activities that have the ability to provide a living income, while reducing suffering worldwide.
Our experience with 240 past Academy students since 2005 shows us that the BioQuest Academy science immersion experience helps participants understand the nature of scientific research, increases their knowledge of global health and infectious disease and their awareness of biomedical and STEM career pathways, as well as their entry into and persistance in these fields.
Last year we published our observations from the first 5 years of BioQuest Academy scientific training and thoughtful mentorship. In addition, all piloted Academy curriculum is now available here as free pdf files, broken into 2MB files for easy downloading from the web.
